Act Naturally

The other day I caught a story in The Atlantic about Ringo Starr. The piece, written by Beatle fan Mark Leibovich, was titled “When I’m 84: The World Still Needs Ringo Starr.”

Ringo’s always throwing the peace sign and yabba-dabba-doin’ about “Peace and love, peace and love.” He’s like the late, great Muhammad Ali—when he’s in an airport or strolling through a hotel, people start chanting, “Ringo, Ringo!” and he fires up the peace sign and yells back, “Peace and love!”

Ringo was always the friendliest Beatle, avoiding the feuds and lowering the tensions. He had a thing for offbeat sayings and Lennon kept a little pad to scribble them down. He called them “Ringoisms”—that’s how they came up with “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Eight Days a Week.”

Ringo’s got a new country album out called Look Up, because he thinks too many people in the world are looking down. Ringo has always been a fan of country. I just listened to it and it’s real good.

Hey Ringo, keep banging the drum.

Keep your dukes up.
