Da Pope
You gotta admit, last week was a crazy one around the world. It’s got me lookin’ around for things to lighten it up, Gin Bottle Garvey.
You know what gave me a big kick? Those newlyweds from Haverhill who traveled to Rome for their honeymoon. They hoped to see the Pope, who holds an audience and blesses newlyweds. But getting a spot to meet him isn’t guaranteed. So these diehard Red Sox fans brought along a Chicago White Sox hat, thinking it might help. The Pope is from Chicago—and a lifelong White Sox fan.
So Kelly and Gary DeStefano had the lid with them when they got to meet Pope Leo. Gary pulls the hat out of his back pocket and hands it to the Pope, telling him they’re Red Sox fans from Massachusetts. The Pope laughs and says, “You’re going to get in big trouble for this.” Then he takes off whatever the hell that headgear is called, puts on the White Sox hat, and they snap a few photos.
This is an American Pope—and a cool guy. He blessed the hat and handed it back to Gary. Man, what a keepsake. The couple is so thrilled, they’re going to put it in a glass case and someday tell the story to their grandkids.
Hey, I picked up a Pope Chicago t-shirt the other day. They’re selling like crazy—and the design’s not bad either. Keep your dukes up.
