I'm Going To Wear A Hat In Church

Yep, Pope Leo, the first American pope, is a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan. He’s even been spotted sporting a White Sox hat at the Vatican.

The other night the White Sox pulled off the best promotion of the year. If you bought a ticket to the game against the Reds, you got a free Pope hat. They ended up giving away over 40,000 of the things. What a goddamn sight. A stadium full of screaming fans wearing Pope hats. God bless ’em.

And this was no cheapo cardboard Burger King crown. It was a well-made, stiff fabric hat that stood 11 inches tall. They even sent a carton of ’em to the Pope, complete with the White Sox logo. I always say, if you’re gonna do it, do it right or don’t do it at all.

The other neat thing was that the ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by a nun, Sister Mary Sobiek of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield. Jesus, this was fun. No papal blessing for the home team, though. The Reds beat the White Sox 5–4 in 10 innings, but it was still a Holy Night. Keep your dukes up.
