Ridin' High
All I gotta say today is that this is one of the greatest events of the year in America. Especially this year. You know what, Bub? From a culture standpoint, I’d put this street hootenanny right up there with the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Masters, the National Wiffle Ball, and Horseshoe Pitchin’ Championship.
What I’m talkin’ about, Bucko, is the annual King of the Streets Lowrider Parade in San Francisco. I heard they had maybe 500 classic Buicks, Cadillacs, and Chevys. These lowriders were cruisin’ the streets with bands and a mariachi group entertaining the big crowd. One lowrider even bounced his car up ten feet. Folks of all kinds filled the streets—Latino, black, white, Asian—all showing up. One guy said, “This looks like America to me, man.”
Yeah, the “Low Rider” tune was made popular by the group War and was featured in the Cheech & Chong movie Up in Smoke. I’ve always been a big fan of that song, and I’ll admit, if I’m driving solo I turn that tune up loud and do a little Ali bob-and-weave in the driver’s seat. If I had a goddamn classic lowrider Chevy, I’d be king of the road. Keep your dukes up.
