In Times Like These, Feed Phil

A lot of people tell me that they don’t watch the news anymore. They say it’s nothin’ but bad news. Hey, I still read a bunch of newspapers daily and online media. I still watch the morning and evening news, but I gotta admit—it’s getting heavy, and sometimes I just have to get the hell away from it, Gin Bottle Garvey.

So I happened to find this story in The New York Times about Phil Rosenthal. Who the hell is Phil Rosenthal? I never heard of the bloke. Turns out he was the creator of the hit TV show Everybody Loves Raymond. Well, now he’s got a show called Somebody Feed Phil. It’s on Netflix and already in its 8th season. I didn’t know that—did you, Bucko?

Phil takes viewers on a goodwill eating tour of the world. He comes across as everybody’s favorite uncle. He’s the upbeat, sunny counterpart to the late, great Anthony Bourdain, who had a darker side. The neat thing about Phil is that at the tail end of every show, he has a big reunion dinner with everybody who appeared in that episode. That part is great. And this month, he plans on opening his own diner in L.A. He’s been a diner fan since he was a kid growing up in Queens, New York. He’s naming the diner Max & Helen’s after his parents, who passed away recently.

I tell ya, Phil is always cheerful—and that’s how you’ll feel after watching the show. Ya gotta watch it. Keep your dukes up.
