With God On Our Side
I’ve been thinkin’, you know who might be the most sensible leader in the world? That Chicago White Sox fan, Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope.
With all the combat going on in the world, and both sides of every hubbub working religion into everything, here’s what I’ve been noodling: maybe the best mediator would be the agent of peace, Pope Leo.
Give a listen to “With God on Our Side.” Bob Dylan was inspired to write it after hearing a rendition of “The Patriot Game” by Liam Clancy, who he called the greatest ballad singer of all time. The tune criticizes using religion to justify war and atrocities. He recorded it in 1963. Same as it ever was.
It’s interesting, since Pope Leo took over, his progressive direction and popularity with young people has increased church attendance by 30-70%. Christ, I might have to go back to Mass. Keep your dukes up.
